Mr Justice Hawkins decided, at the Leeds assizes, that prisoners may make to the jury a statement of their version of the matter with which they are charged, but not upon oath. Mr Justice Lush, who was sitting in the nisi prim Court, was consulted on the point and entirely agreed with the ruling of Mr Justice Hawkins. Accordingly, in the case in which the question arose, the prisoners in the dock made their statement to the jury after the address of their learned counsel, The Waimate town clerk has resigned a salary of £250 a year and the Council have invited applications for a successor at £llO per annum. - ■ The Creditors of E. W. Mills, of Wellington, have unanimously agreed to recommend that an immediate discharge, be. granted.
