THE LATE TIMARU FIRE BRIGADE.
SECOND EDITION
• « A further meeting of the members of the above Brigade was held last evening at the Clarendon Hotel. MrT. Murray, (late captain), being unavoidably absent, Mr Barry, (lieutenant), was unanimously, voted to the chair. The Chairman stated that in company with Mr Dawes he had attented Captain Mills, and that gentleman had most kindly undertaken to provide them with 14 flags, and, if possible two port lights for the ball and procession on Tuesday night. He also stated that Mr Dale had consented to supply, free of cost, the waggon and pair of horses required as part of the procession. Proposed by Mr Hutton, seconded by Mr Snodgrass, and carried by acclama. tion —“ That this meeting beg to accord a most hearty vote of thanks to Captain Mills and Mr Dale for their kindness.”
The meeting then resolved into Committee for the purpose of discussing several matters of detail in connection with their probable final disbandment. It was generally understood that as soon as Mr Turnbull’s interview with the Borough Council had taken place, and that body had decided on their action, that Mr Turnbull had promised to attend the meeting and inform them as to the result. The Committee meeting was therefore prolonged to allow sufficient time therefor.
About ten o’clock the meeting resumed, and the Chairman reported that the Committee had been informed that Mr Turnbull had attended the Council, and that Coucillors Jackson and Greenup had moved and seconded a resolution, to the effect that it would be best for all parties concerned that the Brigade should return to their duties. This motion, however, had been lost, only the mover and the seconder having voted for it. This kindly effort of Mr Turnbull’s having so terminated, (and he for one regretted that such should have been the result), it now remained only that the ex-mombers should
promptly decide as to the final steps to be taken.
Proposed by Mr Snodgrass, seconded by Mr Kelly, and carried—“ That the previous resolution, as to the recovery of the property of the late Brigade, by legal means be now endorsed, and Messrs Barry, Kelly, and Waters, be appointed,to seethe same carried out.”
It .was then arranged,.that the members should meet at the Melville Hotel at 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening, to form in procession. The Artillery Band, would also be there at the same time. It was also decided that the procession should be torchlight, and a committee was appointed to carry out all uecessary arrangements. On the motion of Mr Dawes, seconded by Mr Collins, it was resolved —“ That the Chairman be empowered to call a further meeting, when deemed necessary by the Committee.” The meeting then terminated.
