Attention is drawn to the fact that in all the important races, both in Australia and New Zealand, a large proportion of the horses originally nominated are subsequently struck out of their engagement*!, and therefore the numbers of non-starters in nearly all other consultations receive but a very trifling and almost infinitesimal amount each, and in many instances,' they receive actually less than the amount of their application lee for a non-starter.
