Bone Brown at last. Auckland. March 21. Samuel Brown a well know citizen of many years standing has been committed for trial on three charges of burglary. The defence set up when the cases were broucht some time ago'was insanity and Brown has since been in the Asylum A Bad innings. James Patten was playing at cricket at Onehunga, and was fielding the ball, ■when another cricketer ran into him, knocking him down and breaking fire of his ribs. Thanks, not Confidence. Oddfellowship. "Wellington, March 21. A number of the officers and representatives of the . Grand Lodge of 1.0.0. F., of New Zealand, arrived here yesterday, to attend the usual session which open this morning. Their arrival was made the occasion for a special reception service at the Masonic Hall last night, when an address of welcome was presented to the Worthy Grand Master Wheeler, and the representatives of the Grand Lodge. The following lodges arc*, represented : Pride of Newton, Auckland ; Pioneer and Leith, Dunedin; .Alfred, Oamaru ; Star of Canterbury, Timaru ; Mount Ida, Naseby; United, South Dunedin ; Ravenshourrie, Ravensbourne ; Southern Cross, Wellington ; Avon and Addington, Christchurch ; Pioneer, Southland ; Invercargill, Invercargill. Reports from the Grand Master, secretary, and treasurer were read and submitted to a subcommittee for consideration. Editorial Rashness. Henry Anderson, journalist, threw himself off the wharf this morning. He was rescued with difficulty in an exhausted state and taken to the hospital. He had been in depressed spirits for some time past. An Unfortunate Harvest. Christchurch, March 21. On Saturday night some stacks belonging to Mr James Shaw, near Rangiora, were destroyed by fire. Their value was £l6O and they were uninsured. The fire is supposed to be due to an incendiary. A Popular 'Profession. Thirteen candidates presented themselves at the barristers’ and solicitors’ examination to-day. There are eleven candidates at the examination for the Normal School junior scholarships. Volunteer Affairs. Dunedin, March 21. The officers and volunteers in this district have decided not to take part in the Queenstown review, but will camp out at North Otago if the Government sdpply tents. A Hew Regulation. In the Supreme Court to-day Judge Gillies astonished counsel by refusing td grant discharges in eases where there Were no assets, unless the applications wefe supported by a resolution of the creditors. It has been the custom here to grant discharges as a matter of course where there was no opposition. Property Tax. Close on £5500 was paid in for Property Tax to-day.
