The Rev J. Buller kept a large audience amused and interested last evening at the Wesleyan schoolroom, Bank street, with his reminiscences of a visit to the Old Country. The rev gentleman has a capital delivery and a good deal of quiet humour peeps out at times when he is speaking. Young ladies on the look out for a husband, he told his audience, had better not think of going home, for there are too many young ladies similarly engaged there to render their success at all probable. A trip home was a very nice thing, but to enjoy it the voyager must have money to spend. For L4OO a man unencumbered with wife or family, the lecturer thought could go home and travel all over England and have a “ good time” generally. The lecturer's memory was stored with an inexhaustible fund of anecdote, and his descriptions of things he had seen and persons he had met while on his travels were given in the most graphic manner. At the conclusion of the lecture a hearty vote of thanks was proposed and carried to Mr Buller.

The other evening a stormy meeting of total abstainers, publicans, and tapsters occurred at Morniugton, one of the suburbs of Dunedin. The meeting, which was presided over by the Mayor, was convened “to consider the advisability of opposing the proposed applications at the ensuing meeting of the Licensing Court for additional hotels in the district.” The manager of the Dunedin ••Herald” submitted an anti-license resolution which was declared carried, although two-thirds of those present declined voting either way. The president of the local Band of Hope next moved “that it is undesirable that a house which is the property of a leading member of the police force (as in ihe case of Mr A. Healey’s application) should be licensed as an hotel.” The proceedings immediately became so disorderly that the female ratepayers fled, and their leave-taking was the signal for a storm of rotten eggs, which found their way into the building from the doorway. The motion was finally carried by a small majority.

Double tickets at single fares will he issued at Christchurch, Timaru, and intermediate stations, on March 21, 25, and 26, for the accommodation of intending visitors to the Ashburton Exhibition. Owners of horses are reminded that the nominations for the Timaru Cup, Flying Handicap, S.C.J.C, Handicap, Hurdle Race, and Winter Oats Handicap, must be made with the Secretary before 8 o’clock tonight.
