THE NEW BAIL WAY STATION.

The following letter has been received by the Chairman of the Harbor Board:— “ Head Office, Wellington, “ March 5,1881. *■ Sir,— With reference to my letter of Dec. 17 last, and to your communication of Jan. 27, I am now directed by the Hon. the Minister of Public Works to forward for the information of the Board the accompanying tracing showing the proposed design for the Timaru station. The matter has received very careful consideration at the hands of the Government, with a view, to so arrange the accommodation as to meet the requirements of all descriptions of traffic, viz., port, town, and private sidings in connection with the station. In carrj’ing this into effect it has been found necessary to greatly enlarge the station yard, and to use for this purpose a portion of the land recently formed by the action of the waves ; but on this subject the Hon the Minister for Works will confer personally with the Board on his next visit to Timaru, which he expects will be shortly. In the meantime, however, he has desired me to intimate to .the Board the intentions _of the Government in the mutter. With regard to the question of working the Board’s wharf, I directed to state that the Government is prepared to lay temporary accomodation on the wharf as required, and work the same under the regulations in respect to haulage from stores and sheds as at present in force for port traffic, and further to undertake the collection of wharfage for the Board, should it so desire, charging at the rate of per cent for the service, but before putting this into operation, it will he necessary for the Board to submit full information on the subject of the rates it is intended to levy, as a certain amount, if due, is necessary to perfect arrangements in connection with the matter, I have &c., “A. W. Werry, “ Under Secretary for Railways.”
