A rabbiter named William Martin having been starved out by the phosphorous exterminating mixture, announces a sale of his dogs in a Southland paper. Writing to the editor he says ;—“You know 1 am a poor devil, living out by myself in these mountains, who, by force of circumstances occasioned by this Captain Raymond, has to seek fresh fields, and not only that, I enclose 7s fid for previous advertisement, for which you ought to be thankful. You would, if you knew me.” Speaking of the dogs he says :—“Here you have dogs ancient and modem—Plato, Pliny, Horace Greeley, Confuscius, Stout, Civis, and many others. The last two won’t be sold —money won’t buy ’em. They are playful, and full of little tricks ; but they are the best young pair this aide the Equator. There is very little profanity required with this lot. A Y.M.C A. could work them. A minister of the Gospel could earn an honest living by ’em. Insurance agents ! The very thing for ’em. Now, as a sensible young lady has placed her fortune at my disposal, with the single reservation that I should marry her forthwith, having found a good strong chap that isn’t brokenwinded, I must part with ’em.” A growing industry—Farming. To get along well—Dig it deep. Which of the reptiles is a mathematician ? The adder. What is the difference between a fixed star and a meteor ?—One is a son, the other is a darter. It is difficult thing for a dog without a tail to show his master how much he thinks of him.
