LEVELS BOARD OF HEALTH.

The following report has been submitted to the local Board of Health for the Levels Koad District “To the Chairman Local Board of Health, « g lKj —During the last two months I have made a close inspection of all the thickly populated portions of the district, and with few exceptions I find no complaint. In cases where pigs were kept too near a dwelling, the proprietors have, either done away with them altogether or removed them. “ There have been several cases of typhoid fever in and around Sandie Town, but I could not trace them to any particular source. _ There has, of course, been a scarcity of water in the neighborhood, and during the late excessively hot weather this has had a bad effect. There is also a great want

of surface drainage in this neighborhood, and many families living in the very lowest part of the gullys receive the drainage from the higher portions. “ Several cases of fever have been reported at Pleasant Point, but in only one case could I trace it to any particular cause, that being Roberts’ Boarding-house, where there was a drain partly covered in, and running partly round the house, the sewage being allowed to accumulate in one corner of the garden, close to the pumps from which they obtained their water. I ordered the same to be opened and thoroughly cleaned, aud at my last visit this had been done.

“There is still the large cesspool at’the Railway Hotel, but as I before stated I do not think it would be advisable to have it emptied until the advent of frosty weather. I cannot hear of its having been emptied for several years and there does not appear to be any offensive smell unless it is uncovered. “Charles Weight, “ Inspector of Nuisances. “March 1,1881.”
