GERALDINE ROAD BOARD

The usual monthly meeting of the Board was held on Tuesday. Present—Messrs Postlethwaite (chairman), Godsell, DeEenzy and Slack.

The following tenders were considered: — No., 7 —Pleasant Valley Groin: George Hammond, £3B; Thomas Gregon, £35; William Kennedy, £35;. Timothy Coffey, £32 10s; Denis Herlihy, £27 (accepted). No. B—Sliingling near Beattie’s : Thomas Gregon, £55 10s ; Patrick Burke, £SO ; Timothy Sugrue, £4B ; Cornelius Flynn, £4(5 13s 4d ; John Breen, £45 15s ; George Crozier, £42 17s 6d ; William Kennedy, £42 ; James McCool, £39 ; John Casey, £3B, accepted. No. 9—Wilson’s Road : Thomas Corkcry, £55 ; Patrick Burke, £45; John Filield, £4l 10s ; William Kennedy, £4O ; Timothy Sugrue, £3B ; Michael Tagney, £36 ; Timothy Coffey, £39 ; Richard O’Neill, £35, accepted. The following correspondence was read: — From Mr Tate, enclosing transfer of road in Healey’s township, and enclosing account for same.

Resolved—“ That the amount be paid, ’ From Mr Nathaniel Longley with reference to the exchange of a gravel reserve. From the Mount Peel Road Board enclosing a resolution passed at its last meeting with reference to the Rangitata traffic bridge, offering a sum of £IOOO towards the extension of the bridge, provided that the Geraldine Road Board contribute an equal amount. Resolved— 11 That the Clerk acknowledge receipt and forward copy of resolution passed at public meeting of ratepayers.” From the Bank New South Wales, re fixed deposits and stating rates of interest. Resolved—“ That fixed deposits falling due on March 15 be placed to current account.”

From Mr H. Tomlinson objecting to his assessment. Reduced to £2los.

From Mr Thomas Sherratt asking the Board to form the road to sections 69 and 70 in Maslin’s paddock. Resolved “That the Overseer report upon the same. From Mr W. C. Andrews, enclosing a cheque of £C Is 2d, being balance of sales of a horse and cow out of the pound. From Mr W. J. Butler, objecting to the assessment.

Resolved—“ That as the track is opened since Butler left, and tenant is not leaving on account of bad road, therefore the Board cannot consider a reduction in the assessment.” From Messrs Webb and Harris, asking extension of time, of one week to finish contract. Granted. From Messrs Walker and Clogstoun, asking to have road improved from Four Peak Station and their firewood bush. Overseer to inspect and do what is absolutely necessary. From Mr T. Hardcastle and five ratepayers, asking the Board to gravel the road from old sheep yards tc Dale’s corner. Resolved—“ That the overseer call for tenders if he thinks it necessary.” From the Geraldine County Council, asking the Board to contribute £IOOO towards the repairs of the Rangitata traffic bridge, as the Council has accepted the responsibility of paying one-half of the cost of the same.

Resolved—“ That a copy of the resolution passed at a public meeting be forwarded, viz.—‘ That the Geraldine Road Board will grant a sum of £SOO towards the extension of the Rangitata traffic bridcre conditionally that the bridge is carried out on the original design, viz., cylinders, and that a rate be struck over the whole county of 6d in the £.’ ” The Overseer’s report was considered, and resolutions passed thereon, namely ; Webb and Harris, granted 14 days extension of time to comnletc their T. Oregon’s cheque to bo held over until the work is done to satisfaction. Two of the three two-roomed immigrants cottages to be lined, painted and put in good repair agd let as soon as possible, and the land divided into two parts with the understanding that at any time it may be subdivided, Work near Hilton’s to be done. Pipeclay Cutting to be cleaned out.

Resolved —“ That a store be erected for holding horse feed, &c., and tenders called for a supply of 400 bushels of oats, Mr John Huffey waited on the Board asking for the kerbing to be done in front of his store and premises, and offering to bear one half the cost in labor. Resolved—“ That the work be done.’’ Mr Longley asked the Board to sell him gravel reserve 1055. The Board replied that they cannot sell the reserve. Mr Gapes requested the Board to gravel the road from Gapes’ Valley to Kakahu hush. ; Mr Slack who is going over the road, was requested to report upon it. Resolved —“ That the Board approve of the action taken by the Chairman, with reference to opening up the Reserves of the township of Geraldine. Accounts were passed amounting to £3’o Kis 6d, The meeting then adjourned until the second Tuesday in April.
