Yesterday was the last day for the payment of the first instalment of the property tax. The sum received at Timaru by Mr Howky, deputy commissioner, up to date, amounts to £1720. This is exclusive of amounts that have been paid through the post offices. A considerable number paid the two instalments together. So far as the returns to band show this district has contributed about as much as Wellington.
For some days past .there have been significant enquires in town, respecting Mr W. Barnett, clerk to the Levels Road Board. Mr Barnett has not been seen for a fortnight, and it is currently stated that he left the colony by the last San Francisco steamer, so that he must be near America by this time. His absence partly accounted for the postponement of the meeting of the Levels Road Board yesterday. We learn that a special audit of the Board’s accounts is being made,

Bateman of Christchurch has got nimse.lf into bad odour, with a portion of the Community, through contributing “an appeal to the. people of Oamaru and Otago” to the “North Otago Times,” in which he suggests that Oamaru and Timaru should be constituted free ports and that their harbors should bo worked and improved at the cost of freehold properties or by means of a district land tax.

Mr Moss Jonas will dispose of ' the privileges in connection wiih the St, Patrick’s Day Sports at his rooms on Saturday next at I p.m. The privileges comprise general license booth, refreshment do., gates, games, £c. For the convenience of person’s attending the sports on St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) the afternoon trains will leave Timaru an hour later than usual.
Cristofani’s Waxwork Exhibition, is announced to open on Fridaj r next, in tlie premises lately occupped by, Mr Turnbull, near the Theatre Royal. The exhibition kas been very successful in Australia, and had a long run in Sydney, The figures arc described as really life-like, and comprise the Kelly gang, the actors in the Opera House Tragedy, the Death of the Prince Imperial and several other interesting groups.
Messrs Maclean and Stewart will dispose of fho privileges in connection with the forthcoming race meeting at the Point on Saturdaynext at 2 p.m. The privileges include ageneral license booth and a re; frshment booth.
Clapham’s universal consultation will be drawn on Monday next. Full particulars appear elsewhere. Tht big shark caught yesterday, has been on view all day at the rear of Mr Price's fisbmongery establishment, and has attracted a good many visitors, The Recognition Services of the Rev. T. Bray, as pastor of the Baptist Church, Timaru, will be held on Sunday, March 13, when the Rev. T. A. Cato, of Christchurch, will preach morning and evening. On Tuesday, March 15, a public tea meeting will be held, when addresses will he delivered by ministers of various denominations.
