A GHASTLY DISCOVERY.
The police of Kerang were horrified upon hearing that a man passing Barr Creek noticed the body of a horse lying in the water (say as late number of the “ Clunes Guardian). The police were informed of the circumstance, and on arriving, attempted to pull the animal out. It was then found that the horse was in the shafts of a dray. After considerable trouble the harness was cut and the horse and dray pulled on to the bank of the creek. On the dray being pulled out, the body of a man was found, which proved to be that of Alexander Gordon, a farmer in the neighborhood. In one of the pockets a bottle of rum was found. The deceased was evidently drunk at the time the sad affair happened. On Monday last Gordon attended the Kerang Police Court as a witness. Before he left Kerang at midnight, he had been drinking heavily. It is supposed that whilst riding home in his cart he fell asleep, the horse walking along without any guide. At all events the wneel tracks show that the horse did not walk to the usual crossing place, over the creek, but went over a steep part of the bank of the creek. Gordon was a married man, and leaves three children.
