A meeting of the creditors of George Thrush, late of Wellington and Christ church, was held yesterday afternoon. The assets are estimated at £24 4s Gel, and the liabilities at £lßo_los 3d. _At the termination of an exciting meeting a resolution was passed to the effect that Mr Samuels be retained for the purpose of opposing the debtor’s discharge by every possible means. The wife of one of the creditors came forward with a child in her arms, and addressed the debtor as follows ;—“ Come out into the road, you vagabond, I have not done with you yet.” She denounced him as “ one of the unemployed” who came from Wellington, and added that he had £l6 in his pocket when he came liei-e. Itfo Xfew licenses. Wellington, March. 1. At the Licensing Court to day all the applications for new licenses were refused the police having reported that no further hotels are required in the city. Unfortunate Ratepayers. Dunedin, March, 1. The City Council by 6 to 3 determined to raise the rates to eighteen pence. Censured. At the coroner’s inquest concerning the death of Henry Mayo, the jury returned a verdict of accidental death, but added a rider expressing the strongest disapprobation of the carelessness of the railway department in not providing a signalman at Kensington crossing at all hours when trains are running. Sale of Racehorses. Mr Driver has purchased Sir Modred, Somnus, and Idalium colt.
Wellington Canards. Invercargill, March. 1. The Wellington correspondent of the “ News” wires that a new loan of three millions is to be raised as soon as the time allows and that the papers left by the outgoing mail. It is stated that the Government have also prepared an exhaustive report re the value of the plant &c. of the colonial x-ailways, which is thought to indicate the selling of the lines to the Brogdens and the formation of a syndicate in opposition to Vogel.
