drunkenness. Thomas Gaffney was charged with being drunk and disorderly, and was fined 10s with the alternative of 48 hours’ imprisonment. BREACH OK THE LICENSING REGULATIONS.
Joseph Nelson, licensee of the Opihi Hotel, was charged with selling liquors after midnight on Feb. 14. Mr Hamersley appeared for the defendant who pleaded not guilty. Constable Stanley, stationed at Pleasant Point, deposed to visiting the Opihi Hotel on the night in question. At ten minutes past twelve o’clock, the bar was lit up and also a sitting room. Witness looked in through a window and heard glasses and bottles jingling. Twelve or fifteen people were in the room.
By Mr Hamersley—Looked through the bar window; the Venetian blinds were down. Could not see anything but heard Mr Nelson’s voice and heard glasses rattling. Also heard music playing. There were fourteen or fifteen people in the room Five were adults, the rest children. Fred Prentice, shoemaker, residing at the Point deposed to visiting the Opihi Hotel on the night of the 14th. There was a bit of a dance on and witness played. The bar was closed about 10.30 as nearly as witness could say for there was no clock. Had made arrangement with Nelson to stop all night at the hotel. The charge was dismissed. CIVIL CASES. In the following cases judgment was given for the plaintiff, with costs : Taylor and Bowie v M. O’Connor, £6 19s ; same v J. Hollis, £1 15s 3d ; same v D. McGrath, £6 19s 9d ; Kempthorne, Prosser and Co v J. Thompson, £6 7s ; W. Evans v F. Hancock, £44 7s Id ; H. Taylor v F. Clayton, £2 12s 6d. Bruce v. Mason—Claim £23 18s Bd. Mr Koid, for plaintiff ; Mr Hamersley, for defendant. Judgment for defendant with costs. FAILING TO MAINTAIN. John Tozer was ordered to pay 7s a week towards the maintenance of his two children at the Burnham Industrial School. LARCENY. Thomas Gaffney, a rough looking
fellow with about a dozen “ aliases,’ was charged with stealing two pairs of trousers, valued at 365, the property of Messrs Wood and Smith, drapers.
The accused had previously been fined for drunkenness. The accused was arrested last evening with the clothes in his possession, by Detective Kirby. [Left sitting.]
