TIMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL.
An ordinary fortnightly meeting of the above toot place last evening at the Council Chambers. Present —His Worship the Mayor, presiding, and Councillors Shepherd, Sherratt, Gibson, Gabites, Greenup, Jackson, Ross, Cullman, and Filmer. CORRESPONDENCE From Messrs Harper, Harper and Scott, solicitors, Christchurch, on behalf of Mr R. H. Rhodes, claiming £l2O compensation for land taken by the Council in making the Main South Road. The letter was referred to the Council’s solicitor to report on at the next ordinary Council meeting. From Mr Henry Ford, forwarding valuation as requested of portiou of Educational Reserves, Nos. 699 and 700, the property of the Canterbury College, and which is required by the Council for waterworks purposes, fixing the value of the land at £lO per acre, £l6l in all.
The valuation was accepted. From T. T. Brownell and about 20
other ratepayers,, requesting that tlic Council would erect a public weigh bridge as being a necessity much felt. It was resolved that the application be received and considered at the next ordinary meeting of the Council. An application from Captain Cain for a modification of the Building Regulations was refused, the Council considering that these applications cannot be granted in some cases and refused in others. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £142 16s Bd, general, and £1706 15s 10d, waterworks, were passed for payment. EXTENSION OF TIME. Messrs Nicholas, Corkcry, and Scidcrman, waterworks contractors, applied for an extension of time in which to complete their respective contracts. Mr Dobson, waterworks engineer, recommended that the applications be complied with, which was accordingly done. DOWN AGAIN ! It was resolved, on the motion of Cr Ross, seconded by Cr Jackson —‘‘That a committee, consisting of Crs Filmcr, Gabites, Cullman, Greenup, and the mover, be appointed to enquire into the system and work at present undertaken by the whole of the Council’s servants in respect to- proposed reduction of
laborers’ wages, appointment of ranger, &c., and that the Committee lay their report before the next ordinary meeting of the Council, Cr Filmertn be chairman of committee, three to form .a quorum.” His Worship the Mayor remarked that he could not see why the Council should be paying 8s a day for labour when the contractors were paying only 6s per day to their men.
With respect to the work done by the Council’s servants, referred to in the foregoing resolution, Councillor Gibson remarked that Mr Lough, the Town Clerk, had too much to do, and he thought lie should give up the secretaryship to the Benevolent Society, and also to the Hospital Commissioners, as he would then have more time to attend to his Municipal duties. Cr. Cullmann wished to know why Mr Lough “ went in for so many billets.”
TENDERS. The following tenders were opened for the supply of fencing wire,standards, strainers, and staples : Priest and Holdgate, £1358 14:, 3d (accepted) ; E. Wilkin and Co., £1396 10s ; John Anderson, £1424 5s ; Ogilvie and Byers, £1452 12s 6d. PRISON LABOR WANTED. It was resolved that the Mayor be authorised to contract with the Government for the prisoners to remove the bank in Sophia street and to widen the same street on the east side, opposite the sewer, at 4d per cubic yard. WATER.
Proposed by Cr Eoss, seconded by by Cr Greenup, and carried —“ That whereas many residents in the suburbs of Timaru have been applying for information in respect to a water supply outside the Borough, in reply this Council will take into consideration the supply of water,upon the whole of the residents in any particular locality making a proper application.” The Council then rose.
