The ship Oamarn, from I.ondon, arrived to-day at the Otago Heads —all well. The Otago cricket team returned to Dunedin, from Christcnutch per express to day. The quarterly Licensing Court for the town of Tiraaru. the Levels and Mount Cook districts will be held at the K.M. Court to-morrow at noon. Them arc no new applications likely to be made, but the police will prosecute one publican for selling during prohibited hours. A contingent of the Northern visitors to the Dunedin races left Dunedin races, left Dunedin in a special train of four carriages at 10 p.m. on Saturday. The carriages were well filled at starting, but by the time the drowsy inmates passed through Timaru —viz 5 o’clock on Sunday morning —their numbers were diminished to about one-half, and sufficient room was left to enable the Cathedral citizens to pursue the rest of the journey in the arms of Morpheus. We learn that the Dunedin Jockey Club are in treaty with the inventor for the right to use two totalisators on the Forbury course in future. The success of the totalisator at the late meeting, has been such as to place it beyond a doubt that the instrument will be an immense gain to the promoters of racing generally. Not only does it promise, in the hands of the stewards, jto he a splendid source of revenue, but it constitutes a magnificent attraction. The defendant in a certain case heard at the E.M. Court this morning appeared, when called, to be a good deal “mixed.” After he had given two or three rather mysterious replies to the Bench, Mr Beetham, looking sharply at him, enquired, “Have you been drinking, sir?” Witness (Pulling himself together)—“No, sir; nothin’ but lem’nade, anyway.” Perceiving that it was a hopeless case His Worship adjourned the case, remarking to the defendant, “ Mind you are here to-morrow morning, and don’t drink any more lemonade—it’s evidently too strong for you.”
