ST. PATRICK'S DAY SPORTS.

A largely attended meeting of persons interested in arranging for a Sports’ gathering on St. Patrick’s Day, was held at the Criterion Hotel,on Saturda} r evening, Mr George Atkinson in the chair. A capital programme was drawn up, comprising as the leading events, a dlOydsHandicapHurdlc Race,first prize £i> ; St. Patrick’s Day Handicap, 880yds, first prize a cup, valued at £5 ; Publican’s Handicap, II miles, first prize, £1 ; Walking Handicap, 2 miles, first prize, £1 ; Irish Reel, Irish Jig, and Highland Pling, all in costume, first prize £2 for each competition. The events will be open to all comers. A committee was appointed to carry out the arrangements in connection with the meeting, and it was resolved to engage the services of the Artillery Rand for the day. The sports will be hold on the Old Show Grounds, and will, doubtless, be well patronised. Endeavors are to be made to get the railway authorities to run an excursion train at low fares from the country districts, and should the Clerk of the Weather only be in a good temper a really enjoyable day’s amusement may be anticipated.
