London. Feb. 7
The death is announced of Sir Richard Graves Macdonnell, who was Governor of South Australia from 1855 to 18G1, and who succeeded the Marquis of Norman by, as Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, in 18G4. He was GG years of age. Much anxiety is felt concerning one of the steamers of the celebrated Cunard line, running between New York and Liverpool. The steamer is now ten days overdue. There is grave reason to fear that the vessel has foundered in one of the recent heavy gales. Feb. 9. Uuder the organised system of contributions, arranged by the Irish Land League, the funds in hand have accumulated to such an extent beyond present requirements, that the leaders of the League are investing large sums in realisable securities, in order to be prepare for future emergencies. A measure introduced by M. Naquet for the purpose of legalising divorce in France has been rejected hy the French Chamber after a very animated discussion. At the present time the French law does not permit divorce on any ground, and the proposal to introduce the right of divorce under certain circumstances is steadily resisted by the clerical party.
