The match was commenced at Hastings at 2 p.m. The Australians were highly pleased with the wicket. Dixon, captain of the Hawke’s Bay team, won toss, and the Australians took the field. Atherton had a capital run of luck and scored 20 when he was caught out at long-on by Groube. Martin made a splendid display, scoring 17 before he was caught out by Slight. The local players closed their innings for 79. After the wicket had been rolled, the Australians wont in for half an hour, Spofforth and Palmer facing the bowling of Liddlc and Edwards. Several singles were obtained chiefly owing to bad lidding, when Edwards got to Spofforth’s off stump. 1 —2—4. Murdoch, wiio was loudly cheered, took Spofforth’s place.
