A curious meeting of creditors was held this week at the Supreme Court Wellington. The bankrupt was a Mr F. G. Payne, and the attendance of ere litors who had proved was just sufficient to constitute a quorum. One creditor, Mr M. C. Hickey, a member of a mercantile firm here, however, had gone there prepared to have his wishes attended to, With one proxy he proposed himself as chairman, with another he seconded the proposition ; and with the remainder of his proxies, he carried it. Following up this, be proposed that he be trustee, and, in ximili modo, carric 1 it. At a meeting of the London Commissioners of Sewers, a report was brought up from the Streets Committee on the subject of electric lighting in the city. It was proposed to divide the streets into three districts, each of them including one of the city bridges. On a rough calculation the cost, including plant, &c., would he about four times the price now paid for gas lighting; but eliminating the expenses which would not recur, the cost would be only twice that of gas. The Commission unanimously adopted the report of the Committee, and decided that the experiment should commence in February. From “Notes and Queries,” published in London, December 18, we cut the following key to the characters in “ Endjrmion,” which will be found interesting to readers anxious to decipher its hidden inuendoes:—Zehobia, Lady Jersey ; Bercngaria (Lady Montfort), Hon.
