NEWS OF THE DAY.

On ordinary meeting of the Borough Council will be held this evening.

Christchurch is just now suffering from a plague of mosquitos which swarm there in thousands. A Tiraaru resident, who returned from a visit to the Cathedral City on Saturday, has got both his arms beautifully tatooed with the bites of this engaging little creature as a memento of his trip.

Christchurch would seem to be anything but a pleasant hunting-ground for the much-married and severely-sealed saints of Utah. The “ Lyttelton Times ” says : “ Last night the Mormon Elders were making preparations for preaching in Cathedral square, when a number of people showed unmistakeable signs that the discourses would be interrupted. The police intimated that the Elders had better give up their intention, and the latter moved from the Square. The mob, however followed them, and from hooting took to hustling, so that at length the police had to take the Elders under protection and march them to the Depot, whither the mob,, now some 000 to 700 strong, followed. The disappearance of the Elders within the Depot was the signal for more hooting, but after the lapse of a few minutes the mob dispersed without further disturbance, beyond the singing of some popular air. The usual monthly meeting of theTimaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association lapsed this morning, the members being engaged grass-hopping.
