Wreck of a Steamship.
Meluoukne, Feb. 12
Telegrams are to hand announcing that the steamship Ridge Park, 1200 tons, has been wrecked near Gabo Island, on the New South Wales coast, while on a voyage from Adelaide to Sydney. All lives have been saved. NEW ZEALAND. FPeb “ Times” Special Wxbe.l Auckland’s Big* Bock. Auckland. Feb. 14. The Harbor Board election to-day excited great interest. D. H. McKenzie, chairman of the Board, who refused to pledge himself to carry out the big docks, was defeated. Messrs Stone, Compton and Isaacs, all in favor of the dock, are elected. A Happy Family Breaking ITp. Wellington, Feb. 14. An information has been laid by the Superintendent of the Asylum against three of the female attendants for striking and ill-treating a female patient. Accident to a West Coast Steamer. Westtokt, Feb. 14. The Charles Edward steamer in coming from Greyraouth struck some sunken rocks off; the Steeples and knocked a hole in her bottom. She steamed ahead, but the water rose in the engine room and she then anchored. There was an impenetrable fog at the time. As soon as the accident happened guns were fired, and these were heard at Westport, but nothing practical was done. The Grafton, from Greyraouth, was seen by the Charles Edward, and great endeavors were made to attract her attention but without avail. Information reached Westport of the accident, and the Grafton proceeded to her assistance, and after standing by ber all night towed the disabled vessel to Westport, arriving this morning. An enquiry will be held. Another Fire • Dunedin. Feb. 11. A lire broke out at ten minutes past nine o’clock on Saturday night in a fourroomed house owned and occupied by Harrold, grocer, Brown street. Very little could be done on account of the scarcity of water, and just before the brigade arrived it seemed probable that Campbell’s house adjoining would also be destroyed. It however, escaped with a scorching. The tenement in which the fire originated was, with the whole of its contents, completely burnt. Mr Harrold is at present away on a trip to Melbourne. Mrs Harrold on Saturday night went out at half-past 8 o’clock, leaving a kerosene lamp in the back bedroom. The furniture is insured in the Transatlantic for £l5O. Campbell’s house is insured with the National for £l6O. The risk on the bouse in the Union expired on Feb. 1. Harrold’s house is insured in the Transatlantic for £2OO.
