Owing to the recent severe weather and a succeeding thaw the Thames has overflowed, causing much damage to low-lying localities. At Lambeth the inundation has been very- great, and hundreds of the inhabitants by the waterside have been flooded out of their houses.
The death is announced of Mr Marsh, an old Australian colonist and Fellow of the lloyal Colonial Institution. Some years ago Marsh represented Salisbury in the.,House of .Commons. Feb. 1. The weather In California has been unusually severe. Heavy and continuous downfalls of rain have resulted in floods in several parts of the State, causing great loss. The damage done in Sacramento Valley is estimated at 100,000 dels.
A meeting lias been held in Paris of the promoters of the scheme for the construction, of the . canal across the Isthmus of Panama. Baron DeLesseps stated that although the work was one of enormous magnitude, he had no hesitation in affirming that the undertaking would be completed within seven years. A public meeting of the Conservative party has been held, at which the Earl of Beaconslield delivered an important speech upon the action of the obstructives in Parliament. He contrasted the present indecency of conduct exhibited by the Parnellites with the dignity and decorum which had hitherto been tire boast of the House of Commons.
February 6. The feeling expressed by the Eadical press and representatives of that party upon the action taken by the House of Commons in the expulsion of Parnell and his adherents is that while condemning strongly the continued obstruction of those members ( who are insulting the Legislature they deplore that any action should be taken calculated in any way to seriously infringe upon the rights of minorities to free untrammelled discussion.
It is rumored to-day that the Cabinet have under consideration the desirableness of taking measures to disband the Irish Land League as being dangerous to the well being of Ireland, and inimical to the authority of the Imperial Government in that country. An agitation has been commenced among the women of Ireland, headed by Miss Parnell, for the purpose of advocating the claims of the Irish Land League. Meetings are being held, at which inflammatory harraugues are made in support of the movement. ... There is no. prospect of the strike among the coal miners of Lancashire being brought to an end. The workmen are persistent in their demands, and the masters have signified their intention not to yield. Other collieries have joined those on strike, and it is feared that other trades will be-affected. A telegram lias been received from Suez announcing that the Arabian tribes are forming themselves into a military league for the purpose of freeing themselves from the dominion of Turkey.
