Christchurch, Feb. 11. Freight to England ks 50s a ton. Quotations; Wheat —new, 3s 5d to 3s (Jcl. Oats —feed. Is 3d to Is 5d ; milling, Is 6d to Is 70. Barley, 2s (id to 3s ; Butter, Cd ; Cheese, 34<1 to 4d ; Mutton, 2d ; Beef, 17s per 1001 b, MELBOURNE. The Melbourne “ Age” announces under date 29th January :—At a meeting of the managers of the Associated Banks, held this afternoon, it was decided to reduce the interest on fixed deposits for 12 months from 4 per cent to 3 per cent.” and in their commercial column of Ist February the rate of discount is thus quoted:—“We hear that although the nominal rate of discount is retained at (3 per cent, for three months’ bills, first-class paper has been and is being done at 5 per cent.” Surely it is time that the banks in New Zealand made some reduction in their rate also, 7 and 8 per cent being out of all proportion to the true value of money here. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report under date Jan. 26th.
We have no material change to report in this market. At our usual weekly sale to-day wc submit led a catalogue of 6,23!) bags, the bulk of which we placed the principal withdrawals being in barley, which is much easier. The top price of the day fur wheat which was obtained at our sale was 4s DA pur bushel. Oats are in fair demand.
Quotations me as follows : Flour is moving off in trade parcels at from £8 17s 6 I to £9,
Wheat is steady at quotations, ordinary to "mod realise I from 3 s sid to 3s 1011 ; superior from 3s lid to 4s Old ; and prime up to 4s D,d per bushel. Barley is easier, ordinary feeding realised from 2s to 2s 5 i ; and malting from 3s to 3s SRI.
Oats are not quite so firm as when wc last reported. Feeding have been selling at 2s 4d ; stout up to 2s 6id : and milling up to 2s BLI.
Adelaide, Feb. 11. Wheat, Is 3d to 4s 4d, with little enquiry. Town Hour £lO 5s to £lO 10s; country brands £!) ss. Freights from United Kingdom to Adelaide, 45s ; from out-ports, 47s (Id. Sydney, Feb. 11. New Zealand wheat to-day is quoted at 4s 2d per bushel.
