Mr Wm. Postlethwaite has been reelected by the Geraldine Road Board for the Timaru Harbor Board. The death of Mr Robert Glover, an actor, well known in New Zealand, and son of the lessee of the Theatre’ Royal, Glasgow, is announced. ' " 1 " "

The Bluff Harbor Board have resolved to superannuate their harbor master, Captain Thomson. He is to have £167 10s per annum retiring allowance.

It is anticipated that the gross pioceedS of the property ;tax will amount to £270,000. This will be materially reduced, however, by the cost of collection. The commissioner, deputy commissioners, assessors, and reviewers will get the flesh, and out of the bones the Hon. the Colonial Treasurer will scarcely have enough to maintain his Taranaki warriors and pay Dr Pollen his illegal pension.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Protestant Alliance Friendly Society, Victoria Lodge, No. 57, was held last evening in the Sophia street hall. W.M. Bro. Shepherd presided, and a large amount of business was disposed of. The Secretary drew attention to the fact that various members had not communicated their change of residence, and requested that they should do so at once. After some further business of a routine nature the meeting closed. A weights and measures raid, similar to that what took place, some time since at Timaru, came off at Lyttelton. Several tradesmen at the port were fined yesterday for breaches of the Act. The defendants complained of the hardship of being pounced upon by the inspector, and their weights carried off for such trivial differences as were entirely owing to the orlinary wear arising from cleaning them. Tliey claimed also that no sufficient provision was made for having their weights tested at short intervals, the present facilities being such as to cirail great inconvenience in their business. The Bench considered that the cases brought relieved the defendants from all suspicion of an attempt to defraud, and that they were breaches of the act arising from negligence. The lines imposed amounted to £26 in the aggregate with costs, and the weights seized were forfeited. There arc in the country wild geese and others (says Angles.) The editor of the " Donald Times,” in his leading columns, describes a sporting adventure, and concludes thus :—•• Amongst the few wild geese secured Mr 'Waddell's cook was surprised to find in the bird supplied to her that it had a windpipe about three feet long. We were shown the curiosity, and found that instead of directly entering the stomach it was so formed that it doubled itself four times, and the food passed through about three feet of windpipe before entering the stomach. We have nothing in type to describe this peculiarity, but there are some brass instruments, like the trombone, that may give a good idea of it.” Well! I doubt if I could find anything in type to describe the probable appearance of the editor if he tried to pass his dinner through his windpipe on its way to his stomach. His views of internal anserine economy are entirely original.

A Board of Eeviewers will sit to hear and determine objections to the property assessments at the B.M. Court, Timaru, to-morrow, at 11 a.m., for the Timaru Borough, Levels Road, and Mount Cook Road Districts.
