TIMARU SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
An ordinary meeting of this Committee was held last evening. Present —Ail the members.
Reports were read shewing the average attendance to be—boys, 226 ; girls, 202 ; infants, 3Ho. In compliance with a request from the Yen. Archdeacon Harper, it was resolved that Wednesday should be a school holiday, so that the children may attend the annual festival of St. Mary’s Church.
The Rev Win. Gillies and Messrs R. B. Walcot and 11. Bellield were selected as members for the vacancies on the Education Board. The Chairman read a letter from Mr Manslield resigning his position of third
master at the Public'.‘School, and asking to be" relieved of his duties in afoitnigbt instead of a month. It was intimated that; Mr Scott, the head master, had suggested the appointment of another female teacher,: and a re arrangement of salaries. -The Committee resolved to adhere to the fmW scale‘of salaries adopted by the Board, to grant Mr Mansfield’s request, and to request the Board to appoint a female L-acher at £lO5 per annum. A communication was read from the Board, tendering £5 for the purpose of clearing the grounds at the Side School. The Chairman designated the oiler a downright insult, the grounds being overgrown with “wild Irishmen” and tussocks, and the Board havinn: invited tenders for the work, the lowest of which was £l4.
It was decided to expend the £5 to the best possible advantage.
The tender of A. Wilson for seavongering at 15s per week was accepted. On the motion of Mr Hall, seconded by Mr Rowley, it was resolved—“ That the compulsory clauses of the Education Act, 1877, be at once brought into force in the Timaru School district.”
Messrs Gibson and Hogg were appointed visitors for the Public School, and Messrs Hall and Hart for the Side School for the month.
Mr Hall gave notice that at the next meeting he would move—“ That the Board of Education bo respectfully requested to convert the Timaru Public School into a District High School, as provided by clause 55 of the Education Act. 1877.” The meeting then adjourned.
