Coercion for Parliament, London, Feb. 2
In the House of Commons this afternoon, Mr Gladstone gave notice that he would propose that a majority of three-fourths of the House, on a motion of “ urgency,” should suffice to give the Speaker supreme control over the Chamber, and give him immediate power to suppress disorder. Mr Gladstone’s proposal is made in view of the disgraceful scenes which occurred last night in the House during the debate on the Irish Coercion Bill. A Great Kight Flickering.
Thomas Carlyle, the well-known author, is now alarmingly ill.. His physicians hold out no hope of his recovery. Turkey’s IHtlmatu m. Constantinople, Feb. 3. In reply to representations made by the Ambassadors of the Powers the Porte has declined to state beforehand the maximum concessions which Turkey is prepared to make to Greece in Epirus and Thessaly, but is willing to negotiate in regard to the demands put forward by Greece.
