THE AUSTRALIANS AT CHRISTCHURCH. [By Telegraph.] [I!Y OUR SPECIAL reporter.] Christchurch. Feb. 1. Only £l5O was taken at the gates yesterday. Ihe weather to day is very hot indeed, with scarcely a breath of •wind. There are about 1500 people on the . ground. Ollivier and Watson appeared at 10 minutes after 12 to face the bowling of Spoiforth and PalmerOllivier opened flukily, putting Spoiforth to leg for four. A leg bye was run from the next ball. Watson put the last ball of the over to leg for a single, for which two might easily have been run. Watson cut Palmer’s first to cover for three, and Ollivier followed with a single* bringing the score up to ten. Watson then flukily put Palmer down to third man for a couple. The first ball of Spolforth’s next over was a very fast one, and displaced Ollivier’s middle stump. 1—5 —12, Leach, the next comer, hit Spoiforth to leg for two, and Watson nicely played a maiden over. Spoiforth also bowled a maiden over. Watson obtained three singles olf Palmer’s over. Olf Spolforth’s next each batsman got a single, and the last ball of the over the demon lifted Watson’s leg stump a couple of yards, 2—10—19. Secretan filled the vacancy, and the second ball he got he played into Boyle’s hand at mid-on. 3—o 19Hartland succeeded Secretan, Palmer sent down a maiden, and Spoiforth ditto. Leach got a single off Palmer’s next over. Spoiforth another maiden. Hartland got a single by putting Palmer to square leg, Spoiforth was again credited with a maiden. Leach put Palmer to off, Murdoch earning a round of applause for a piece of smart fielding. Hartland got a single for a leg hit and another for an off drive off Spofforth, following up by cutting Palmer to cover point for a single, and putting Spofforth away to leg for three. Leach put Spofforth beauti • fully away for a single. Runs, however, came slowly, the last twenty minutes only producing ten runs. The first ball of Palmer’s next over Leach gave an easy catch to Alexander, who refused it, and failed to throw in the ball which, had he done so, must have cost him his wicket. Hartland snicked a single. Spofforth and Palmer bowled maiden overs. Hartland next drove Spofforth to on, but Tobin being on the exact spot, only one resulted. He then played forward to Palmer and missed it, but mirabile dictu, Blackham let him off, and he signalised his joy at escaping by hitting Palmer to leg for four, and next skied Palmer to square leg, but not within Slight’s reach. Each batsman got a single by square leg hits off the next over. Spofforth and Palmer each bowled a maiden over, the smart fielding by Murdoch preventing running. Palmer sent down a maiden. The second ball of Spofforth’s next over, a rare break-back,took Leach’s leg stump. 4—6—42. A two hit credited to Leach should be leg byes. Hartland got two for a leg hit off Palmer. Two leg byes followed but no runs were scored. Spofforth bowled a maiden, and Palmer followed suit. Corfe put Spofforth to leg nicely for four. 50 up, Hartland drove Palmer for a single, but Corfe, foolishly stepped out to the next from Palmer, und was stumped by Blackham. 5—4—51. Reeves joined Hartland, who put Spofforth to leg for a single. Four byes were next run. Palmer was credited with a maiden. Reeves seemed to play forward to one Spoffiorth’s, but cut it for four. Hartland managed to put one just past Boyle, but Palmer with his next ball clean bowled Reeves. 6—4—61. Ashby hit Palmer to leg for two, and Hartland drove Spofforth to on for three. Ashby put him to-square leg for a single, but two overs later Palmer caught him off his own bowling. 73 —G 7, W. Frith joined Hartland and two leg-byes were run. Frith then then hit one round to Palmer. 8 —0—G 9. Fowler skied his first to the on for a single, and then played a maiden from Spofforth. Three byes were now run. Fowler put Palmer to leg for two' The adjournment for lunch then took place.
On resuming at 3 o’clock about 6000 people were present. The third ball of
Spofforth’s next over Hartland put into Jarvis’ hands, at point. 9—26—75 Cotteriill started by driving Spofforth for 3, and poking Palmer for a single. Fowler got a single off Palmer, and one off Spofforth. Three byes were run, and Cotterill got a single for a drive off Palmer, and in the next over he was grandly caught at square leg by Slight, the ball being barely six inches. off the ground. Fowler, on being joined by Redmayne, hit Palmer to leg for four, and then snicked him for a single. Four byes were run. Fowler got a single off Spofforth, and a leg bye in the same over. Two more byes were then obtained. Redmayne lifted one of Palmer’s high to on, but Jarvis could not get back far enough, and he got four. Fowler put Spofforth away for two, then drove him for two and a single, and drove Palmer to off for two and cut him for a single ; he next, amid great cheering, drove Spofforth right into the ladies pavilion, following it by driving him to off for a single, Murdoch, again fielding finely. The second ball of Palmer’s next over he hit sharply to point and was splendidly caught by Spofforth. 11—24—115. Fowler played in his old form, knocking up his runs in very quick time, C. Frith was the next comer, and snicked a single, following it up with a fine off drive for, three off Spofforth. Two byes were run. 120 up.
