CUSTOMS RETURNS.

The customs returns for the month of January are as follows

The members of the’ ’Timaru Artillery Band again made the streets musical on Saturday evening, by performing some favorite selections to the great enjoyment of a large concourse of people. Although the muster of bandsmen was not very numerous, there could be no doubt of their proficiency, and the excellence of their performances was greatly appreciated by delighted listeners. Since the musicians are so willing the public should be made to provide them with a suitable bandstand.

A street scene' which was far from edififying took place in the centre of the town on Saturday evening when the main road was at its busiest. It was occasioned by the arrest of a drunken man. In the opinion of the bystanders the violence displayed in connection with the arrest was unnecessary and unjustifiable. Although the members of the force are poorly paid, that is no reason why they should lose their temper.
