Extensive Fire at Kaiapoi. Chbisxchttbch, Jan. 28,
A disastrous fite occurred at Kaiapoi at two o’clock this morning. Five buildings were destroyed. They consisted of shops and dwelling houses occupied by J. Hornby, C. P. Wilson, Johnstone," Ayers, Allen, and Isaac Wilson. The insurances are £IOSO in the South British, £2OO in the Northern, £7OO in the National, and £SOO in the New Zealand. The estimated value of the property destroyed is £4370. The origin of the fire is unknown.
Destruction of a Flour Mill* Dunedin. Jan. 28
Deihi and Davidson’s flour mill Otepopo was burned down this morning. Insurances on stock £BOO, building £3OOO, machinery £ISOO, divided as follows : National £IOOO, Union £SOO, South British £IOOO, United £SOO, Victoria £looo,Standard £soo,New Zealand £BOO.
Embezzlement Extraordinary.
. Moritzon’a case is now on. The City Court was for some time rather lively while Reid, manager of the Standard Insurance Company, was under crossexamination. The defence will be that the business of the Company has been loosely conducted, and that an attempt has been made to make Moritzon a scape-goat for expensive defalcations that have taken place. Black Science In Trouble. Lio Medo, a colored gentleman, who has been lecturing as a phrenologist, has been arrested for obtaining money under false pretences. Indignant Cricketers. The committee of the Otago Cricket Association writes to the “ Star” strongly condemning the conduct of Moore and Carr in refusing to bowl against the wind in the.late Australian match. Both are called on for an apology.
