WORKING MEN’S CLUB.
SECOND EDITION
A meeting was held last evening at the residence of Mr Hallam, Beach road, to consider the advisability of forming a Working Men’s Club in Titnaru. On the motion of Messrs Mills and Hallam, Mr J. M. Shepherd was voted to the chair. The chairman briefly stated the objects of the proposed club. A reading room, library, and apartments for correspondence, refreshments, and amusements being among the advantages that would be placed at the disposal of the members. The speaker read the rules of a similar institution.
Mr Fisher proposed, and Mr Mills seconded —“ That this Club be called the Titnaru Working Men’s Club.” Carried.
The Christchurch rules were adopted as the laws to govern the Club. Some minor alteration having been made, several gentlemen present from Christchurch explained the very successful working of these rules in that city. They intimated that a card of membership held by a Timaru member would entitle him to a gratuitous card of membership in similar institutions in various parts of the colony. Mr Hitch, while agreeing with the general principles of the Club, objected to greater facilities being given for unlimited drinking, and argued that a limitation of the hours at which refreshments could be obtained would be beneficial. He concluded by moving “ That the Club be entirely closed on Sunday,” a proposition that was seconded by Mr Mills. An amendment was proposed by Mr H. Bradley, and seconded by Mr P. Bradley—“ That refreshments be supplied between the hours of 8 and 10 p.m. on Sunday.” The amendment on being put was declared to be carried by a majority of two. . . A very decided opinion was afterwards expressed by many present, which caused a reconsideration of the amendment and resulted in its being withdrawn, the original proposition being declared carried. Mr Fisher proposed and Mr Mills seconded—' That Mr J. M. Shepherd be the first President of the Club.” Carried. Mr H. Bradley was also elected VicePresident. Mr Mills proposed and Mr Fisher seconded—“ That Mr W. Poole be permanent Secretary to the Club.” Carried. Mr Mills proposed—“ That Mr Goddard Jackson be Treasurer.” Seconded by Mr Hallam and carried. Messrs Fisher and Mills were appointed trustees. Messrs H. Bradley, K. Hallam, M. Cusack, A. Mills, and G Jackson ' were appointed a temporary Committee, with power to add to their number. Mr A St. G. Haraersley was appointed solicitor, and the National Bank of New Zealand bankers to the Club. It was then proposed, seconded, and carried that the officers and Committee meet on Tuesday next, Feb. 1, at 7.30 p.m., for the purpose of making .general arrangements, and that a meeting for the enrollment of members be held on the ensuing Thursday at Mr Hallam’s, Beach road.
A vote of thanks having been passed to the chairman the meeting was adjourned.
