On board H.M. troopships the officers’ accommodation, and that of their wives if on board, is regulated pretty strictly in accordance with rank in the service. In a certain troopship lately en route to India, three ladies, whose husbands belonging to different branches of the service, were nearly equal in rank, found themselves occupants of one cabin in which there were four wash basins, one of which was much larger than others. The question at once arose who was to have this big basin, and words ran high. The paymaster of the ship was referred to, and he, poor man, was at his wits’ end.
