A confectioner being deprived of his wine license for his shop on Marine Parade (a fashionable resort) at Brighton has caused terrible consternation among the owners of property there by placard* ing his premises with an announcement that they will be opened as a general marine store, where “ the best price will be given for rags and bones.” _ A little while ago a detective named Kelly was fatally wounded in Dublin by a man who was caugnt “ red-handed,” bearing the still-smoking pistol. A jury was shortly afterwards empannelled to try the assassin, and each of their wives received by post, the same evening, a neatly-made widow’s cap. The murderer was acquitted on the ground that his victim’s death was not owing to the shot, but to the incompetence of the surgeon who treated him. Hall, a Gym pie miner, after several years’ persevering labour, withoutresults, has struck a rich leader in the ground which had been in the possession of several parties previously. The first crushing of fifty-four tons of stone from the reef gave the sensational yield of 1 ; 3490j5 of retorted gold.
