The wild pine of the West Indies, which grows on the branches of trees in hot climates where there is little rain, has a “ mug ” which will hold a quart; when the dew falls it is received, and a valve closes at the top and prevents evaporation. Birds are frequently seen to insert their beaks and procure water from the " mug,”
The Timaru portion of the San Francisco mails, arrived per express to-day, and the letters and newspapers were delivered this afternoon. The Timaru contingent of the C.Y.C. will parade at Maclean and Stewart’s yards on Friday afternoon. Mr T. Machin invites tenders for carpenters’ work, painting, and glazing. The members cf the 1.0.G.T., hold a lodge meeting this evening, in the Concrete Store, Elizabeth street. Tenders are invited for Contract No 2 erection of St Mary’s Church. Mr Dan. McGuinncss’ pure-bred sire Sherwood is about to form the subject of a grand art union. Tickets are obtainable at the Ship Hotel. Sherwood is one of the grandest of sires, and the winner will have a live fortune. A valuable leasehold property in Sophia street with Cottage &c., will be offered for sale at Wildie, Allan and Stumble’s rooms, on Tuesday next. A number of other eligible propeities are announced in onr advertising columns. The opportunity of acquiring freeholds on reasonable terms, is one that intending residents should avail themselves of.
