AUSTRALIANS v. INVERCARGILL. The match between the Australian Eleven v. Invercargill Twenty-two was commenced shortly before 1 o’clock yesterday. Invercargill having won the toss, went to the wickets, playing to the bowling of Palmer and Spofforth both of whom were most fatal, and with the exception of one ball badly [mulled,
the fielding of the Australians was equally as good. The Twenty-two were disposed of for the small score of 43, Spofforth taking 10 wickets for 19 runs, and Palmer 9 for 21. The Australians then went to the wickets, and after some brilliant play the stumps were drawn at 6 p.m., Groube and Slight being still in, and a total having been scored for 6 wickets of 154. The following are the scores : INVEKCAUGILL TWENTY-TWO.

OTAGO TWENTY-TWO,
Concerning the Otago Twenty-two, who are to meet the Australians at Dunedin, the “ Daily Times ’’ says : The best bats in the team are Paratnor, Collinson, Haskell, Spring, Crawshaw, Cargill, McNeil, with Harris, Rattray, Strode, Parker, Wyinks, Morrison, J. Leith, Cooke, and Rose, who may, any of them, trouble the scorers a little if their luck is in. We are sorry to see Mallard out of the team, but he is off his batting somewhat lately, which accounts for his absence. S. Leith will keep wickets, Spring having had to resign that post (which he so successfully filled) on account of his hand always knocking un. Leith shaped remarkably well on Saturday, taking the fastest bowling very cleverly. He has something to iearij yet in the way of standing at the wickets, and Spring should give him a lesson. The “ field ” of the team is Haskell, whom we hope to see in the slips to Moore’s bowling. J. Leith, also in this department, did some excellent work on Saturday, returning sharp and true. Austin is a loss to the team in this respect particularly', for he is the nearest approach to Haskell ; and Mallard, too, will bo missed. Another player, whose absence is to be deplored is G-. Clark, who, we understand, cannot get away.
