It is positively stated that the Reform Club raised £270,000 for election purposes. The Duke of Bedford gave £45,000 and the Duke of Westminster a large sum. Cardinal Manning complains that the settlement of expelled French Jesuits in England is an infringement of his rights as bishon of the diocese. The French priests who recently endeavoured to take refuge in Spain have been driven away from Barcelona b}’ a popular rising.
