It is positively stated that the Reform Club raised £270,000 for election purposes. The Duke of Bedford gave £45,000 and the Duke of Westminster a large sum. Cardinal Manning complains that the settlement of expelled French Jesuits in England is an infringement of his rights as bishon of the diocese.
