WOMAN IN INDIA.
Some amongst the educated men of India are desirious to break the chains that hold the women in slavery. 0 thers still desire to keep them down in abject submission. A native lawyer, only a short time ago, pleaded in the English court of justice in Calcutta for the “ abject dependance of woman,” quoting the “ Statues of Menu,” one of the most ancient of their old books. Menu writes —“ By a girl or a woman advanced in years, nothing must be done even in her own dwelling-place according to her own pleasure.” He classes her with the stupid, the dumb, the blind, and the deaf. She may be corrected by her lord, to whom her mind, speech, and body are to be kept in subjection, by means of a rope or cane. This is the position of her who should be his companion, his help meet, and friend. Is it any wonder that the race has remained so degraded for ages ?
