At Newcastle, the gallant rescue of a
woman named Annie Leonard was effected on Sunday, Jan. 2. It appears she was walking along the rocks bare-
footed, when she fell into an excavation, probably she was not aware of. Her cries attracted a man named Diamond, who got down the cliffs and plunged into the sea, at the risk of Ins life. He caught her, and both were washed ashore and into the sea again. Although much injured he managed to clutch a rock, to which they hung for ten minutes, and subsequently the breakers washed them up high and dry. The efficacy of salt water has exceeded the expectations formed so much that the question of dispensing with fresh water hydrants in the principal streets of Sydney in favor of the permanent use of salt water is likely to be seriously deliberated.
A proposition has been submitted to the Melbourne City Council to lay red gum cubes instead of road metal, as a preventive against dust. Lieut Williams, instructor of the local Victorian forces has been dismissed, and this has been followed by the disbandment of the paid artillery. The Memnuir, which has arrived from Foo Clioo. brings news from Port Darwin of a discouraging nature. Bveryone is ill of fever including the Health Officer. The weather was line. Thursday Island shelling prospects are good. Two Kanakas were murdcicd by natives at Newcastle Bay'' on Christmas Day. The Inspector of the Armed Police went in pursuit of the murderers. The Government schooner Pearl has returned from New Guinea.
Hush fires raged in the South Eastern district of South Australia on Thursday, Dec. 30th, and did great damage to several runs. On Ellis Cooler’s station the store, wool shed, men’s hut and contents, and also the yard and a great length of fencing and grass were burnt. The loss is estimated at £‘2ooo. On Garduer’s Mount Schiuk estate, thirty thousand acres of grass, fifteen miles of fencing, aud a few sheep were destroyed. A considerable quantity of grass and other property on Crow’s run and on lauds iu Templemau’s Gully was destroyed. A fire near the Gienelg river swept a large tract of pastoral country.
