Ower’s store, on or before Tuesday, Jan 11, at noon. They have got a singular entertainment at Wellington just now, the programme of which is of a very peculiar kind. It is denominated “poses plastiques and tableaux vivants,” and among the scenes represented the other night was “ the Death of the Prince Imperial.” This was an event stirring and pathetic enough, but there was a slight defect in the vmisem bianco of the scene in that the Zulus were dressed in costumes of Romans and Greeks of two or three thousand years ago, their weapons belonging to the pre-historic epoch. Among other tableaux were “Ajax defying the lightning.” “Diana., 1 “ The death of Abel.” “ Paris awarding the apple.” In the intervals between the poses, a yonng woman sang several songs, which were received with the greatest enthusiasm by the audience, encores being insisted upon. The singer, however, according to one of the local papers, appears to have oramited cultivating her voice, and the timhre of the organ is consequently somewhat harsh. The entertainment seems to attract only small audiences, which is rather astonishing. The audience, io may be added, insists on accompanying the singer, and in giving a free and easy running commentary upon the tableaux and the remarks of the mENDERS are invited for ALTERAX TIONS and ADDITIONS to Building in Great North Road. Plans and specifications to be seen at ray office, where Tenders will be received on or before noon of the 22th January. F. J. WILSON, Architect. JOHN TATE, Upper Washdyke. 650 TIMARU LOYAL ORANGE LODGE, No. 13. lecturess. There has been a good deal of rather unaccountable delay in the arrival of the new books forthe Mechanics’ Institute. There is now', however, every likelihood of the new' importations being to hand on Monday or Tuesday at the latest. The books comprise about 200 works in all, the majority being novels, new and old, the balance of the consignment-being made up of travels, biographies, and books on scientific subjects, all of which will doubtless be appreciate I by the subscribers, by whom the want of something fresh in the shape of mental food has been long felt. And now while on the subject of the library wo will make a suggestion to the Institute Committee. Why not seize the present opportunity while the public curiosity is excited about the new books t 3 reduce the terms of subscription to the library I Timaru is probably the only town in New Zealand where £1 per annum is demanded for the privilege of library membership, and surprise is often expressed that in a community like ours, numbering between five and six thousand people, only about a thirtieth part of that number should care to join the library. The explanation is very simple—the luxury is too expensive. WhenChristchurch,Dunedin, and even little Ashburton can open their libraries at about half the fee demanded here, it is surely time that Timaru followed suit. Apart from the boon that a reduced subscription would be to the reading public there can be but little doubt that the reform w'oulcl bp attended with the happiest results from a purely financial point of view. At any rate the experiment is certainly deserving of a trial. For continuation of News see fourth page. W Hlltctl. WANTED— A Single Man as Ploughman used to FARM WORK and HORSES.
