BRITISH WORKMAN PUBLICHOUSE COMPANY.

From small beginnings the business of the Glasgow British Workman Public-house Company has grown to gigantic proportions. It is little more than three years since the project was started, and although there have been innumerable difficulties to surmount, it has now become a valuable property to the shareholders, and an indispensable institution to thousands of our citizens. Houses have been established in every quarter of the town, and on Wednesday the seventeenth was opened at St George’s Cross. “The St George,s Cafe,” which is the name the new house has received, has been fitted up in quite a luxurious style, and decorated with exceeding taste. The tables and seats have been arranged so as to give the greatest comfort to the body, while the eye finds a pleasing resting-place in a fine collection of pictures with which the walls are hung, A main feature in the decoration of the house is the glass press behind the counter, which has been arranged with painstaking elaboration. It is handsomely fitted with mirrors, and surmounted by elegant pieces of statuary, whereby the appearance of the room is much enhanced. The business at this house, as is the case at the Trongate, Hamilton street, and Gallowgate houses, will include all the branches of a high-class restaurant, always, of course, excepting the article whose disuse it is one of the aims of the Company to increase. The immense success which has attended the undertaking has been due in no ordinary degree to the untiring Jefforts of Mr Timm as the general manager, who has from the commencement thrown his whole heart into the concern, and has

labored incessantly both in maturing schemes for its development and in personally superintending their working.. One of his plans, which received cordial acknowledgment in the directors’ last report, was the establishment of a bakery for supplying the various houses of the Company with bread. It has now been in operation for nearly three months, and has turned out a great success both in securing the best quality of bread, fancy as well as plain, and in effecting a large saving to the Company. ‘ Glasgow Weekly Herald,’ Sept. 25.
