A child named James] Jefford, son of George Jefford, of Papanui, was accidentally killed on the railway line at the Bakaia station on Friday afternoon. Mrs Jefford and three children were in the train, and the mother had just been looking after some luggage, when a sudden jerk caused the deceased to fall backward under the guard’s van and the wheel went over its neck and bieast, causing immediate death. The station master partly described the accident to the want of a new siding at the New btatiou. At an inquest held on Saturday, the jury, after some consideration, returned a verdict of "Accidental death,” with the following rider : —“ That the jury are of opinion that the railway authorities are to blame for using the new station at Bakaia before the proper means for shunting had been devised ; and the jury arc further of opinion that additional protection should be provided at the ends of the platforms of the railway carriages. Communications have been taking place between the Powers, for the purpose of bringing about a settlement of the disputes between Greece and Turkey in reference to the cession of territory. There has been a general consensus of opinion that the Greek Government should not be allowed to provoke hostilities, and again raise the Eastern question in a most dangerous shape. The Powers, therefore, have unanimously resolved that, notwithstanding the refusal of Greece, the matter shall be referred to their arbitration, and that their decision shall be binding upon both countries.
