CHRISTMAS SHOW.

Christmas comes but once a year, But when it comes it brings good cheer, says the old song, and this 3'car its truth is abundantly verilied, at least so tar as Timaru is concerned, for the shop windows are gay with pretty and useful things in keeping with the holidays season. Starting on a tour of inspection from Church street we come to MBS RS J. 13. WITT & CO.'S. Messrs Witt’s premises arc always worth a visit at Christmas time, but this year the Jinn has eclipsed itself in its preparations. In the centre of the shop is a Christmas tree, with its branches laden with lollies, toys, and nicknacks of all sorts. On the shelves and in the windows are cakes of every kind, seed, currant, plain, and iced, while a magnificent display of short-bread, ornamented with designs worked out in comfits and bearing all sorts of appropriate mottoes, present a tempting appearance. Packets

of lollies, and cracker bon-bons, in gail, colored wrappers, fill up the gaps Amongst these are a great number P novelties expressly imported from Hotn< and which only’ arrived at Lyttelto yesterday. Some of these are as ir gcniously designed as they are prettil got up. For instance, there is a Clef patra’s needle, modelled from thcfamoi monument on the Thames Embankmen and covered with Egyptian hieroglyphic in imitation of the original. But to th young people, at least, this is a far moil attractive “ Needle,” for the top conm off and lo ! the interior is filled will colored lollies, while in the base of tin column is another surprise in the shan| it may be of a ring, pin, or little pair q ear-rings. _ But to enumerate half til pretty things to bo found at Mess! Witt’s would occupy more space tlul we have to spare. I J. WAUGH, I This is another establishment (hi just now is replete with Christml novelties in the shape of lollies, suprii packets, French bon bous, &e., of evcl imaginable kind, in addition to a choil display of fruit comprising apricot! peaches, plums, apples, pears, and nu« Surely young New Zealand, must hall a greater taste for lollies than evJ young England has, judging by tfl enormous quantities of sweetmeats I be seen in Timaru at the present tin* and of which Mr Waugh can show® fair share. In the right hand windefl stands a large figure of “ Old Fatltfl Christmas ” shouldering the histofl mistletoe, his florid face lighted up wijfl a beaming smile, denoting his thoroufl contentment. Last night when tfl streets were lined with promenaders tfl luminous figure was the centre I attraction. m T. AMOS. I Mr Amos has always been famed I his good things in the shape of confß tloncry, and his window is cramnfl with a most tempting display of Chrß mas goods. Mounds of sweetmeats B with each other in color and seductiß ness, and packets of all sorts and sifl catch the eye. Standing on a pcdesß in the front rank is our old fricß Father Christmas, again bearing aloffl tiny Christmas tree, and smilingß welcome to all. "fl T. SMITH. fl Mr Smith’s window is chiefly remaß able just now for its display of chfl cut flowers which serve to sot off fl fruit Ac. in a very pleasing mautfl Some of the roses arc exceedingly bB and attracted a good deal of attentfl last evening which will doubtless* renewed tonight. Altogether H Christmas novelties, the fruit, bon-bons, and decorations to be fofl at the establishments we have ted, do Timaru infinite credit. The bakers among whom we men tfl Mr Young of Church street, McGeown, Main South road, and B. H. Francis of Woollcombe have their windows dressed with and sweetmeats while their arc luxuriant with evergreens. fl|
