A man named Edward Johnstone was thrown from a runaway dray, .yesterday in the Orari river, bed and killed.
There was a clean sheet at the Pv.M. Court this morning. It is proposed to form a cement company in Christchurch and to develop the chalk and plumbago depu its at Oxford and Malvern.
Peter Bridge who left Lyttelton on Sunday last in a canoe for the purpose of paddling to the head of the Bay has gone amisshig.
The railway passes arc to be granted to delegates attending the Fire Brigade Convention at Wellington on January 21. During an altercation with an appr. ntice, L. B, King, foreman in an Auckland shoe factory, was treated like piece of shoe leather, and had the artery of one of his hands divided.
At the request of the Good Templars the Government have enjoined the police to make a raid on Sunday tippling. Albury has produced a curiosity or rather a monstrosity, in the shape of a duckling, three weeks old, with four legs instead of two. On land it travels with the lot, bub in water it uses the fore legs for paddles and the hind ones for rudders. This live curio is the property of Mr McAllister. The condemned convict Tula had his case under the consideration of the Executive on Tuesday. It was resolved to let the law take its course, and the necessary warrant for the execution was issued. The prisoner will probably be hanged next Tuesday. At a meeting of the Timaru Boating Club held yesterday afternoon it was resolved that the lllyssus (four oared outrigger) and the Waipa (pair oared outrigger) compete at the Lyttelton regatta under the charge of Mr P. H. Duncan. Mr L. Holthouse was elected Secretary to the Club rice Mr E. H. Campbell resigned. A meeting of the Committee of the South Canterbury Caledonian Society was held last night at the Grosvenor, Mr James Bruce presiding,and there were also present: Messrs Sinclair, Meikle, Maclean, Bell, Mcßeth,aud Captain Mills. An application to run a ‘ Ecgulator ’ sweep machine on the grounds was refused. Mr Bell reported that satisfactory arrangements had been made with respect to the use of the ground. The meeting then adjourned until Thursday next at the game hour and place.
The Annual Sports meeting of the Caledonian Society, which takes place on New car’s Day promises to be to the full as successful, if not more so, as in former years. The old show ground where the sports will be held is within a stone’s throw of town, and band}’ for holiday makers’ who do not care to make a long journey, along dusty roads to reach the scene of their holiday, A capital programme has been prepared, comprising running, jumping, vaulting, and walking contests, to say nothing of quoit matches, sack races, sword dances, I ish jigs, Scotch reels, Arc. The Sports Committee have been and arc wot king hard to ensure the success of the meeting, and one noticeable improvement this time will be the erection of scats about the ground, intended more especially for the accomodation of ladies, who have often complained in former years of having no place to sit down, from which to watch tlie fun. The sports will commence punctually at II a.m., and the Society’s band will be in attendance, and play popular selections during the day. The tram arrangements for Christmas day and Boxing day are advertised elscwheic. Mr George Dodson’s £2OOO Consultation on the Dunedin Cup is announced. The drawing will take place ab nit February 15th. Christmas Meat Show. —Two prizes will awarded on Thursday night to the Timaru butchers, for the best show of meat.— [Anvr. j G. Green will bold his usual show of me it to-night, weather permitting, of quality not to be surpassed by any butcher. He will leave it to the public to judge. One thing be guarantees, there will be no wind in it. No expense has on this occasion been spared in securing the very cream of the stock of South Canterbury, and the exhibition of beef, veal, mutton, lamb, porkers, sucking pigs, small goods and other delicacies, will be one that has never yet been approached in Timaru or surpassed in the colony. The proprietors encouraged by the result of their previous efforts to tickle the palates and suitably furnish the tables of the meat consuming public during the Christmas festival, have resolved to make the forthcoming exhibition something worthy of the richest agricultural and pastoral district in New Zealand.
