A Railway Bridge Illuminated. Auckland Dec. 20. Yesterday the large railway bridge at Mechiuios’ Bay was discovered on fire, but was quickly extinguished. It is believed to have originated through live coal falling between the woodwork from the engine tender. Referred to the Committees. The Scripture Gift Association having asked for permission from the Minister of Education to place illuminated cards with the Lord’s Prayer and Commandments in public schools, the Government reply that the matter is one to be dealt with by the local authorities. Walking Match. A seven mile walking match for £4O aside has been arranged between A. Brett and T. Fernandez. A Sad Christmas-box. Wellington, Dec. 23. A man working at Woolston Steam Wool Works had his right leg torn off by an accident with the machinery. A Missing Man Turned up, Mr H.C. Petherbridgc, who has been, missing from Lyttelton since Sunday, returned late last night. Cold Crushing; Dunedin. Dec. 23. A trial crushing from Convoy’s gully gave three ounces of gold to the ton. Alleged Embezzlement A man named John Connell has been arrested on suspicion of stealing £57 from the Kensington Hotel.
