TIMARU PUBLIC SCHOOL.

The breaking up of the Tiinaru Public School for the Christmas vacation took place to-day. The event was accompanied by a general distribution of prizes in the course of the afternoon, and this will he followed by an entertainment this evening in the Theatre. Prior to the distribution the infants, numbering nearly 500, assembled, and were presented with cards and other gifts by Mr Walcot, Chairman of the School Committee. At three o’clock the distiibution took place in the presence of a large crowd of parents, visitors, and children. The walls of the school were appropriately decorated for the occasion wtth maps, drawings, and other specimens of juvenile industry. Mr R. IV.rnbull, M.11.R., was called on to distribute the prizes. Before doing so he expressed the pleasure he felt in the task, and complimented the committee on their exertions. Although he did not place a very high value on prizes, still he considered it would have a mark of inferiority had the Public School not followed the prevailing fashion. (Hear, hear.) He wasgratilied to lind that the prizes were awarded by the master and teachers whoso Opportunities for weighing the merits of (he pupils enabled them to perform this part of the work in a thorough manner. Those who were prize takers should not be unnecessarily elated, nor should the expectant but unsuccessful feel disdiscouraged. He referred to the nice discrimination that had to be exercised in making such awards, and pointed out that other circumstances besides scholastic merit had to be considered. A pupil leaving school looked for generous if not exceptional treatment, and diligence on the part of pupils not naturally bright had to be taken into account. Mr Turnbull also alluded to some popular errors regarding national education. It was commonly believed that education woidd so alter society that there would be few laborers or mechanics and a surplus of those who lived by their wits or followed a light employment. This was an erroneous impression. The laborer and the mechanic were all the better for being educated. The object of education was not to confer wealth but to increase intelligence and promote happiness. (Applause.) Nor could the colony dispense with a general system of education in view of the strides of other countries without falling into the background in the grand race for national progress. (Renewed applause.) Barents were liable to make serious

j mistakes in looking down upon labor, or . j resolving, because their children shewed , a special aptitude at school, that they must follow some polite , I profession instead of a trade, -Ibcy should never be above teaching their families a trade by which to light . their way independently through the ; world. Labour and the ability to labour constituted true nobility, true ■ manhood, and true independence. The , men who were constructing the breaki water were fulfilling the noblest duty ; of manhood, heaping comfort on their ; families and leaving a useful monument behind. (Applause). He reminded them of the inscription on the tomb of the , Duke and Duchess of Newcastle, in ■ Westminister Abbey : Her name was Margaret Lucas, 1 The young daughter of Lord Lucas, of ■ Colchester, i A noble family, For the brothers were all valiant , And the sisters were virtuous. Mr Turnbull soncluded an eloquent address by admonishing the boys on the ! fact that the pmetakers would bo regarded as patterns by the others, and complimenting the girls, who were more dependent on their seniors from the fact that they had for objects of emulation i an excellent staff of teachers.
