The plant and goodwill of the “ Evening Telegraph ” was purchased to-day, by the proprietor of this journal. It has all along been felt that the field was far too limited for two evening papers, and that one must eventually give way. Our contemporary we believe has fallen into good hands, and though the body has departed, its spirit, revived and purified, will be enabled to breathe freely through the columns of the old established paper of the district.

A meeting of the Regatta Committee was held last night at the Criterion Hotel. Present—Messrs E. Smith (Chairman), M. White, Captain Mills, Graham, A. White, R. Stansell, Newberry, Bradley, J. Hill, and J. King (Secretary). The protest lodged by Mr Collis against the Zebra, winner of the Champion Race, on the ground that she did not go round one of the buoys, was considered, and a number of witnesses were examined. It was decided to disallow it, the weight of evidence showing that the boat went round the buoy, although so close to the eastward as to deceive persons at a distance. Another protest by Mr M White against the Italia, winner of the Sailing Race, could not be entertained,, the written protest having been lodged .too late. £9O was paid away in prize money. It was resolved that the Secretary and Treasurer receive and pay all accounts in connection with the late regatta and submit a balance sheet before general meeting, to be called as soon as possible.

Tenders are invited for grazing on the Agricultural Societys’ grounds.
