BOROUGH COUNCIL.

SECOND EDITION

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of i I the above took place last evening. Present: —His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Gibson, Jackson, I Sherratt, Filmcr, Shepherd, Cullman, and Greenup. CORRESPONDENCE Was read from— Mr James Bruce, re the prevention of storm water from accumulating on his premises, and asking the Council to cany out the promised work to prevent the premises from being flooded. A second letter contained suggestions as to dealing with the storm water. Both letters were referred to Works Committee to report on. From Mr Edward El worth}', offering a piece of land near the lime-kiln, a little over an acre in extent, for £25, wanted by' the Council for waterworks purposes. Referred to Waterworks Committee. From the waterworks snrvey'or, enclosing account for £6 Gs for extra work done. From Mr J. H. Baker, chief surveyor, recommending that the sum be paid if the work turns out equal to the plans. From the Crown Lands office, Wellington, re the Council’s request that the borough may be placed in legal possession of the land reserved for the waterrace, and informing the Council that a grant of the actual portion of the land occupied by the water-race cannot be made , until the race is constructed, as the description of the land reserved by' notice in the “ New Zealand Gazette” is too vague to enable a grant to be made. There would be no objection, however, to the Council taking possession of the land, leaving the legal title to be arranged after the completion of the work. From the secretary to the Hospital Commissioners, notifying the erection of two lamps at the Hospital front gate, and intimating that the commissioners, would have no objection to the Council using the lamps for lighting that part of the road. From the Secretary to the Canterbury’ Fire Association, Christchurch, enclosing cheque for £75, being the Association’s annual contribution towards tiiti main--tenance of the Fire Brigade, Ordered to be acknowledged with thanks. PETITION. A petition from a number of residents re the formation of a portion of Sophia street was held over until next meeting. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £270 3s Gd on general and £lO2 IGs 9d on waterworks account were passed for pay'ment. WATERWORKS TEN DJ3RS. The following tenders were accepted: —Contract No 11—R, S. Watson,.fur the sum of £579 7s 4d ; Contract No 15 —Donald McKendry',' for the sum of £G74 7s; Contract No 1G John O’Connor and M. Shea, for the sum of £9G4 12s. WATERWORKS. A letter was read from the waterworks engineers having reference to the fencing in of the waterworks reserves, and recommending that those parts of the.

Section 55 of by-law No 1 having been suspended for the purpose of empowering the Waterworks Committee to call for tenders for fencing the race, it was resolved—“ That the fencing as suggested by the engineers be considered by the Waterworks . The report pointed out certain omissions made by Mr Thompson, and it was resolved—“ That the Waterworks Com- ; inittec be requested to take action in connection with the survey of plans of water-race reserve, and take such steps ns they may deem advisable to have ; them corrected.” It was resolved with reference to the pipes, “That the engineer bo authorised to employ Mr Huggins to test waterpipes, as soon as he considers it necessary to do so, at a salary of £3 10 per week ; also, the Mayor is authorised to ctoploy the necessary labor at the usual rate of wages.” TOWN LEVELS. A report wns read from Messrs Dobson on the above. The engineers were of opinion that before the town reticulation was commenced the permanent levels of all the streets should be determined, and they offered to do the work (extending over 15 .miles , of streets) for 150 guineas being at the rate of ten guineas a mile. The offer was accepted, PUMPS AXI) WELLS. Five tenders were opened for the maintenance of pumps and wells for 12 months. Two of them were at £6O, one at £63, one at £6B, and one at £75. Mr Gowburn’s tender at £6O was accepted. dog COLLARS. 9 , Several tenders were opened and read for the.supply of .500 dog collars. Mr Ramsey's tender at £l4 11s 8d was accepted, w MB Et.WORTIIY’.S CLAIM. A letter was read from Mr El worthy, referring to a previous letter of his of Feb. 28, 1870, re compensation for land of bis wanted by Council for widening ’the Main North mail, opposite his residence. The compensation was stated at £3OO. The Council declined to take any further steps in the matter. EXCAVATION V,'ANTED. With reference to an application from the Board of Education re certain excavation wanted at the side school. It was moved by Cr Gibson, seconded by Cr Filmer anil carried “That in answer to the Board of Education the Council regret they cannot grant their request reexeavation at side school. DOG REGISTRAR. Mr E. H. Lough was appointed Registrar of Dogs for the ensuing year. BEWARE ! Resolved, “That the Foreman of Works and Town Clerk are hereby instructed to take the necessary steps to prevent any more rubbish being deposited at tlie junction of Arthur and F streets, near Post Office and Gas works. All persons to be warned against committing a breach of the Borough bye-laws,” FINANCE REPORT. The Finance Committee reported that after making provision for certain necessary works, there would be; on May 1, iBBI, a deficit balance of £652. A NEW RATE. Cr Jackson read the following notice of motion—“ That at the next meeting of the Council there be taken into consideration the levying of a lighting rate.” The Council then adjourned.
