[Pee “Times” Special Wire.] The Opunake Murder Trial. Wellington, Dec. 12. At the Supreme Court this morning Tuhi, alias Te Korea was arraigned on the charge of murdering Miss Dobie. MrEorwood, for the defendant applied for a postponement of the trial on the ground that the defence required the attendance of Colonel Roberts to give evidence, it being said that the prisoner had made a statement to him on certain inducements, previous to Tuhi making his confession. After some argument it was found that one of the witnesses in the case, now in Wellington, was present during the conversation with Roberts and therefore. a postponement was not necessary. The trial is now proceeding. Westport Coal Mines. Westport, Dec. 13. Mr Reeves M.H.R., has arranged for a supply of machinery for the "Victory Company’s mine, New Creek, on behalf of the Dunedin capitalists. The mine looks remarkably well. Shipping* Lyttelton, December 13. Arrived—Waitara, ship, from London, all well. Barques: West Riding, from Glasgow ; Thurso and City of Tangore, from Calcutta ; Planter, from Tasmania. Sailed—Durham, s.s., for London. Poverty and Suicide. Christchurch, Dec. 13. John Wilson, 67 years, committed suicide last night by cutting his throat. The cause was financial troubles. Crushed to Death. Dunedin, Dec. 12. At Bannockburn some boys were playing in an old sluicing ground, when one of them named Manson, got a pick and started picking under a hanging face. The mass of earth fell crushing him to a jelly.
