CO-OPERATION.
[to tijk editob] Sib, —I was extremely gratified with your characteristic defence of right principles as pourtray fed in your leaderette of tlic 6th inst. as applied to the present co-operative movement in this district, and to learn that the leading journals of Victoria concur with you in advocating such a self-reliant and independent husinesVassociation. The promoters are|to be commended for the zeal and manly spirit which have been exhibited by them in endeavoring to put into practice' the same principles which at the present period are the means of doing so much in other countries to] free the agriculturist and others from a cruel and onesided business competition. For the credit and ultimate success of our Cooperative Association it is to be hoped that the directors will, when appointed, exercise their best judgment in the selection of a thoroughly competent and widely experienced gentleman as manager; one of known ability, not : only here, but in other districts. One possessing a varied and extended experience in agricultural, commercial, and shipping matters, could, doubtless, do much toward making the Association a national instead of a purely local project. If anything were wanting to convince the farmers of South Canterbury of the necessity for the establishing of such an Association it is the singular and inexplicable apathy evinced by the leading papers of North Canterbury in respect to this project. The reason is obvious, and it is most devoutly to be hoped that yon will, in the name of liberty, continue to ply your pen in the cause of commercial reform. —I am, &c., ' FARMER.
