Cole’s circus has dispersed the various theatrical companies in Christchurch.
Mr Des Yaux, Governor of Fiji, who is now residing at Auckland, has lost an infant daughter, four months old. The next raid on the publicans is to be for neglecting to deface the beer duty stamps on .their empty barrels. Tuhi, the alleged murderer, is being watched day and night in the Wellington Gaol. He will be exhibited in the Supreme Court next week. No charge for admission.
Bardsley and Spn of Dunedin, took the first prize at the Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s Show on Saturday,for exhibits of soaps, which comprised their celebrated prize pale brand, blue mottled, scented soaps, and perfumery. The annual general meeting of the South Canterbury Coursing Club was held at the Grosvenor Hotel, last evening, Mr D. Maclean in the chair. Eight new members were elected. Mr Studholme was then elected President; Messrs B. Thompson, and Dr Mclntyre, Vice-Presidents; and Messrs White, Maclean, Meikle, Stewart, X. Hurt, Dr Hayes, W, Dale, A. Turnbull, G. Laurie, and Hamersley, Committee. The Victoria Brewery at Oanmru narrowly escaped falling into the hands ot the Insurance Companies yesterday. Some shavings set fire to the building, but the prompt application of pump-juice saved the beer tax.
It is said that plans and specifications for the new Oamaru railway station are again in course of preparation. When will the long promised Timaru station be commenced? The Oamaru structure is not very creditable, but the Timaru cowsheds are a disgrace to the railway department. When the Mechanics’ Institute took fire a few weeks ago, there was a general expression of regret that it was not the railway station.
