MR SHANKS, M.H.R., AT WYNDHAM.
Mr Shanks, M.H.R., addressed a well attended meeting of the electors of the Wyndham district on Friday night and in the course of his speech', as furnished by a correspondent to the “ Southland News,” was understood to say, in reference to “Turning his coat,” that he did not leave the Grey Government until it was thoroughly disorganised and the •country had been allowed to drift into Inextricable confusion. It was then impossible for Sir George Grey to continue ;as Premier, especially after his quarrel with Mr Ballance. If the latter had not •deserted him he might have been on the Government benches yet. Sir Geo. Grey Haunched into large expenditure without making adequate provision to n-iect it. The Grey Government, notwithstanding the immense sums squandered broadcast through the Natives by the Native Minister, were upon the -eve of a Maori war, while at the same time, there was no appearance of the promised retrenchment in the Civil service - Having answered a number of local questions ■ a hearty vote of thanks and confidence was carried by acclamation.
